Having Diabetes Is Rough Even To Watch Sometimes

Last night was strange, I actually posted after midnight here.  That is because Stan was having a sugar crisis.  Here is basically how a low sugar crisis is here….it is so so very scary.  Yes, SCARY!

It is 10:30.  I am at my computer, but very easily could have been designated driving.  That got canceled which is a good thing.

He called down through the vents if I could bring him some water.  This is strange because he can walk.  I am thinking to myself “Get Your Own Water”.  I know sometimes he has trouble though and am also thinking that he might think he will fall in the dark.  I go up and get a glass of water for him.  I turn on the lights and look at him.

He is sweating, I don’t mean a little sweat.  I mean the bed sheets are soaked enough to be rung out like a towel accidentally dropped into bath water.

I head for the glucose meter.  It tests 48, which is low, but not extreme.  I know that it is dropping though from the way he is acting and all that sweat.

I got him 2 glucose tablets and a bowl of pears.  He likes pears.

He is heading out of it now as his sugar drops quickly when it starts going down.  I wait 20 minutes though and test it again.  It is 34 which is extremely low.

He is swinging his arms now like an ape.  He has both hands up above his head and he is swinging at random.  He is screaming “Oh Dear” and laughing.  I do mean screaming….I think the house was shaking.  I was surprised Kyra didn’t wake up thinking what the hell is going on.  She was at the other end of the house though and downstairs.

He kept doing this, but he doesn’t know what he is doing and I know it.  I am pretty much freaking out.  I am 1/2 scared he is going to slug me.

I also know that he has had enough sugar to raise his levels.  I go downstairs for safety and listen for him to stop doing this.  He shortly does, well maybe 10 minutes.

I go back upstairs and he has no recollection of what he just did a few minutes ago.  I know he is telling the truth as I have seen these with him quite a few times.

I test his sugar it is 43, but rising.  The rising is a huge difference compared to 48 and falling.

I get him a sippy cup of orange juice.  Yes…sippy cup like I use for Kyra.  He is in bed and will spill a glass everywhere.  He is getting better, but still not 100% in control.

About 5 minutes later, I get him a piece of cake with icing.  I actually get one for myself too.  Cake yum…  I sit with Stan in his room with him in his underwear, not a suggested viewing by the way.  We eat cake.

He goes back to bed.  I come downstairs and post about some idiot bus driver who shouldn’t be driving that had just hit my inbox.  I stayed up an hour.  I went back up and tested his sugar in that hour.  He didn’t even wake up to know I was testing it.  His levels was 115.

I came down and went to bed.  I was exhausted, but glad that I was home for all this.

His sugar was only 180 in the morning after all that sugar I gave him during the night.  (2 glucose tablets, pears, orange juice, and cake with icing)  Each of those items is considered a sugar serving with a meal and he only has 2 sugar servings per meal.  I have no idea why it takes so much for his sugar to rise when it drops like this.  The doctors say to only give 3 sugar servings when it is low.

If you have never experienced diabetes you may wonder what causes all this.  Diabetes is a balancing act of eating the amount of carbs needed versus taking the amount of insulin that your body needs to absorb the carbs (if you take insulin there are other medicines too).

Stan is taking too much insulin, but not because it was always too much.  He is losing weight and eating correctly.  His body is functioning at a higher degree by itself than it did when he first moved here.

That was May 19th.  When he moved here, he was taking 340 units of insulin per day.  He is now over 60 pounds lighter and takes less than 90 units of insulin per day which we will be lowering this week.  He has a doctors appointment on Thursday…I think it is.

In the meantime, he will be eating a few extra carbs with his last meal of the day to balance off the insulin that he doesn’t seem to be needing now.

Diabetes is rough and scary and hard to watch even as a bi-stander when it acts out.  I can’t imagine how rough it is to have this controlling your body and everything you do.  If you have Diabetes, I have the utmost respect for how you live and are able to control this sometimes uncontrollable disease.

Situation Sunday - September 30

Helena-Skyblue is the host of Situation Sunday each week.

Situation # 1
Your spouse has gone away on a business trip. They are going to be gone a week. When they get home, they seem a little strange at first, but as days go by all is normal. One night you just can’t sleep, you try but your still awake. So you get up to watch some TV. You happen to turn on ” To Catch A Predator”.
On that show you happen to see your spouse being caught, and charged what do you do?

Wake him and verify the story with my hearth pounding the entire time.  Stay in shock a few days deciding what should be done next.  Question each and every prior business trip in my mind wondering who were the prior victims.  Beyond this…I am not sure.

Situation #2
You have no children. You are in a relationship for numerous years. It really is not going any where-Day in day out same old humdrom. You love each other but affection is taken for granted, days go by with out a hug. Could you give up your Job-Home, to travel the globe with some one you feel is your true soul mate. Never coming back to where you started from. Could you do it in search of happiness and adventure.

Yes, but I am now wondering how I got to meet this person whom is my soul mate.  I am not all that good at finding/meeting people.

Situation # 3
You are out shopping in a mall. You have purchased numerous items through-out the whole day. You have bags of purchases. In one store you are accused of stealing merchandise. Hunt as you may you can not locate a sales receipt for the purchase…..you are about to be arrested. What do you do.

What can I do??  I guess I would be arrested and have to fight it out with the judge.  Judges are sometimes reasonable…hope I get that one.

Latin Rowdy Brown Trash??? What year is this???

This is just unacceptable that this happened.  This driver should be seriously reprimanded and possibly not driving anymore.

I have 3 Latin students on my route and they are 3 of my favorite students.  You aren’t supposed to have favorites I know, you will catch me calling each of my students my favorite though.  I think that cancels out the no favorites rule if they are all favorites.  When they are misbehaving though, I will tell them they aren’t acting like my favorite student right now.  I will tell there seat partner that they aren’t being a very good friend.  Those are my two common lines.

Anyways…one of my latin students is about the best artist I have ever seen.  I am going to offer him something to draw a picture of me and Kyra from one of my photographs and for something to keep as my “prized” items that I keep in a file every year.  The gifts and photos from my students.

Here is the PDF of the news story should it get taken off, but it is a blog.  I doubt it will.

I am going to tell Robin about this. She is going to the Carolina’s in a few weeks, well actually on October 13th. She used to live down there, so is going to visit friends and stuff. This festival looks like fun so maybe she could meet her friends at it.

I personally like the idea of going to the Museum of Natural Science though. All those science museums are very fun for me, for some reason. I really like life sciences although the fossils and dinosaur stuff isn’t all that interesting to me. I like the modern now sciences more.

I think Raleigh is a great place to visit though. I have been there several times myself and think that if you haven’t and you are planning any type of vacation. Raleigh is worth a thought.

Talking is Easy!

We did virtually nothing, but yet today was very entertaining.  We did go for a walk/wagon ride of about a mile.  Kyra got a hair cut, slight.

20070928_00911a I learned that keys are used to start tricycles as well as cars.  This is actually a picture taken yesterday, so pre-hair cut.  Look at that long pretty lock.  That is one that got snipped today.  She insists on a key every time she rides her bike though, which is very cute.

20070929_01803p Rubber farm boots can be very entertaining.  These are going to be a favorite toy for quite a while.  I can tell already.  They devour her whole leg and she falls in them a lot.  That is what she likes though.  A good challenge never hurt anyone??

20070929_02404p When I asked her what she was doing in this moment, she exclaimed very distinctly “Having Fun” which is now her catch all answer.  How can you be mad with such a response??  Yes, she is spreading Lotrimin on the mirror.  I guess there is no chance of it getting athletes foot now.  Yes, she opened the drawer to climb up into this position.  She is so smart, too smart.

20070929_02804p She is a good healthy eater as well.  She is concentrating on a TV show with us eating an apple from our tree.

She has now graduated from Peek-a-Boo to “You Found Me” which is adorable.  It goes like she covers her eyes and then takes her hands away and she exclaims “You Found Me”.  There is no action nor words needed on your part.  She can do this for hours on end and be completely entertained.

She uses “Yes” and “No” each very well and correctly.  She is always asking for popsicles, so I ask her if she wants a specific color and she usually says “Blue”, but tonight she just said “No”.  It made me smile.

It seems like she has learned to speak very well almost over night.  She can’t carry on whole conversations that you understand totally yet, but she can tell you exactly what she wants when she wants it.  There is rarely a time when I don’t understand what she is talking about.  She frequently changes the way she asks for something when she knows we don’t understand which helps to make me understand the original request, she will also lead you to what she wants and point and scream still.

I don’t know when this happened, but I have totally stopped calling her stinker as well.  She is now pumpkin instead.

It was a fun day though.  I hope more days like this happen.  She is going to her dads tomorrow.  His life is getting pretty stressful now with the guy that works the same job as him having quit as of this week, so when he gets Kyra will not be as regular a schedule.  He is going to be working a whole lot until they find a new driver to work the days opposite him.  It is good for him though to make that extra money.

Anyways…that was my day.  Have a wonderful night.

Los Angeles Criminal Law & Defense Blog vs Nice Pastor

I keep seeing the ugly guys mug all over blogs that I read, so I finally got to looking into who the heck he was to be able to hang around with the famous likes of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.  Well, it turns out he is a celebrity lawyer from the Los Angeles Criminal Attorney Blog | California Criminal Defense Lawyers Forum. He is greatly needed by these two characters.

DSC06903 He looks like the pastor that married my cousin though and each time I see him.  I think weddings not lawyers.  See if you don’t think so too.  I have searched now for about 30 minutes for this photo.

ProBlogger- Which Plugins Do You Use??

Probloggers asks his readers which plugins they use, so I thought I would answer this. I don’t post very often about my blogging here, I usually save those types as guest posts for on other sites. I am going to go ahead and share my plugins here though, so if you aren’t a blogger, you probably won’t know what I am talking about and can just skip this post.

I just cleaned up my plugins yesterday though, so this information is all fresh in my mind.

Here is my top 9. I currently use 15.

  1. Add Sig - This adds a custom signature to the bottom of your posts. I use this one and off to put extra information on my posts. It puts information on all the posts, but when I change it. It changes it on all the posts, so I can put like “Check out my advertiser ________________”. I than delete the line and it is gone from all the posts.
  2. Enforce www. Preference - I like the www, so I make it so that if you don’t enter it. I will for you.
  3. Executable PHP Widget - I don’t have a link to this one. It allows me to run PHP Widgets though which my only one is the one that is on the individual post page that has all the social network submittal sites on it. The top left of the sidebar.
  4. SRG Clean Archives - I honestly have no idea what archives look like without this, so I just leave it. You can let me know what it does…LOL.
  5. Subscribe to Comments - This is one that I really like. It allows commenter’s to get e-mails with all the replies to the post they commented on. I don’t get that many comments here, so I by default have it set to do this e-mailing. I think the post with the most comments here has like 15, so nobody is overwhelmed with these e-mails here.
  6. WP-UsersOnline - This is the count of how many users are online at any given time. It is displayed on my right side bar toward the bottom. It is mostly for my own personal entertainment.
  7. Do Follow - I am a do follow site, so when you leave a comment here. The links is viewable by search engines and the like. I don’t get to many spam comments, so I leave this enabled. I did go through a time where I was getting a lot of spam, so I turned this off temporary. It is mostly wonderful people who comment here, so I figure why not follow them around.
  8. Akismet - This is my spam filter obviously. It does great work. I have a few additional words being moderated, but for the most part. Your comments with valid links will immediately be show thanks to the wonderful Akismet.
  9. My absolute favorite though is Featuring CountComments. This is the plug in that announces how many prior comments the person has left, like for example if you look after my name it says something like “Thanks for comments #525″. I love knowing how many comments a person has made previously. I did a lot of work to get this one to install properly though, so if you aren’t a little able to do coding. This isn’t one for you.

There you have it my most important plugins. Did you learn of one you didn’t know about??

School Dances

The middle school I drive for had a school dance today for 6th and 7th grade.  It was only 2 hours long and basically in the middle of the day.  The kids were about as excited as they could possibly be with comments this morning along the lines of “How am I going to concentrate on school today?”.

I must have some of the most popular kids as well because of the 25 middle school students I drive.  I only had 6 this afternoon.

The school here has hardly any dances during the year with the high school only hosting Homecoming and Prom.  There aren’t other dances at all.

Now, I went to school in a different area.  When I went to school holding a dance was the major fundraising effort of about every organization within the school.  You only needed like 4 teachers and 4 parents to chaperone and the ______________ Boosters could hold a dance.  There were so many different things like cheerleading booster, football boosters, band booster, well every sport that there was hardly a Friday Night that a dance wasn’t held.

They were like $5 to get in and you had to sign in.  You weren’t allowed to leave and come back without paying again…so basically nobody left.  They were held late in the evening not starting until 9 or so and not ending til like 1 in the morning.

I loved going to dances.  It was very common though for me to be grounded from them.  I usually left before they were over too.

I always had fun at them and never, honest, did anything I shouldn’t have at them.  I was a good girl.  I still am of course.

The school I drive for seems a bit on the paranoid side.  They hold them in broad day light and the girls aren’t allowed to even wear dresses.

What is your school’s policy on dances??
